Bikeways Committee Minutes 04/04/07
2 May 2007
Present: Bernadette Burgess, Bob Donahoe, Mike Kain, Dave Maynard, Bonnie Nuendel, Don
Ouellette, Judy Parmelee
Excused Absence: Ron Rencurrel
Minutes of 4 April 2007 were approved.
Old Business
Share the Road Signs. Bob Donahoe reported that the cost of the signs was $903.57 for 14 signs.
Eight have been installed and five more will go in soon. The remaining sign will be saved for future use.
Possible parking on Brackett Road. The next step will be to get a map of the area from the town
planner. NStar would have to approve an area so close to the power lines. The Community Preservation
Land Acquisition Committee may be helpful if it seems feasible to try to obtain this land for a Rail Trail
parking/rest area. Toilet facilities and liability are areas that need study. Don and Bob will follow up.
Tour de Trail. The project will not happen this year due to problems with sponsorship. The Orleans
C of C has withdrawn support. It is on hold indefinitely.
Grand Reopening of the Rail Trail. State personnel hope to have a ceremony in late June. We should
definitely participate when the event is finalized.
Pan Mass Challenge. Bob met with the event leader and showed him the areas of our concern. The vests
we had discussed purchasing to use for this event will not be obtained as they are expensive and we will not
have income from the Tour de Trail. The best thing is for us to become Pan-Mass volunteers so we will be
identified with T-shirts, and can be at sites in Eastham. Bob will enroll committee volunteers for the August
5 event. It is expected that the busiest hour in Eastham will be 8-10:30 AM. Eastham Police cover the crossings
at Old Orchard, Brackett and Nauset Roads. In Wellfleet, CCNS has a ranger at the Marconi crossing and a
state ranger from Nickerson covers the LeCount Hollow parking lot at the end of the trail. It was agreed that we
need to have two of our people on Old Orchard to advise people NOT to enter the tunnel in the wrong direction.
We would also be at other areas where needed.
New Business
Bernadette Burgess announced that she will not seek another appointment to the Bikeways Committee when her
term expires later this year.
Judy Parmelee showed a copy of the new Eastham 2007 Chamber of Commerce book with the new Biking Safety
page that she and Bev Hobbs wrote for this publication.
Next meeting: Wednesday, June 6, 2007 at 8:15 AM
